To become a licensed Community Officer under the Community Officers Regulations, individuals must navigate a structured application process. This process is governed by Subsidiary Legislation 389.02, “Community Officers Regulations”, and is designed to ensure that all community officers are adequately trained, certified, and qualified to perform their roles within the community.

Purpose

  • Possession of a Valid Community Officer License: Individuals must possess a valid Community Officer License, issued by the Commissioner of Police, to legally act as community officers.

Application & Eligibility

  • Age & Education Requirements: Applicants must be at least eighteen years old and possess a standard of education equivalent to a secondary or trade school leaving certificate. Exceptions are made for individuals with over twenty-five years of service in the Police, armed forces, or prison services, or for those who have completed an approved training course before 1st December 1999. For applicants over thirty, this educational requirement is waived if they have completed an approved training course through the Employment Training Agency or an authorized entity.

  • Application Submission: Individuals must file an application with the Commissioner, including necessary documentation such as identification, training certificates, and, where relevant, service records.

  • Fees: The application for a Community Officer License requires a fee of twenty-three euros and twenty-nine cents (€23.29). Additional fees apply for those setting up Community Officer Agencies, with specific rates for individuals and larger entities.

Requirements & Conditions

  • Training & Certification: Prospective community officers are required to complete approved training courses and submit a completion certificate to the Commissioner of Police. This requirement is waived for those with relevant service experience.

  • Renewal & Continuous Training: To maintain their license, community officers must annually attend a continuing training course, emphasizing the importance of ongoing professional development.
